Can anyone confirm that if Ivy is left to creep up around and through a tree it can in affect strangle the tree and couse it to become undhealthy?

Good question that would have been better in the trees section.

Ivy does not strangle trees. It does however hide a multitude of sins and there can be all manner of decay and defects hidden under its leaves.

There is also a competition for resources. Ivy uses water, trace elements and needs light all of which are needed by the tree.

Ivy increases the sail area of the tree and can cause problems with wind loading. It als causes the overall aspect of the tree to be much darker and oppressive than would otherwise be the case. This can be undesirable in domestic situations.

So much the bad points now the good.

Ivy is a wonderful habitat for all manner of insects which in turn support the food web.

If you are going to remove ivy remember that it can be a habitat for bats and they are protected so go carefully.

Oh thanks for that info, I'm growing Ivy around the garden, up the fence, etc., and we love bats. Perhaps now we'll see them in our own garden.

It also seems to provide excellent ground cover over large areas. We have such an area, partly wooded with clearings in between that ivy seem to have established itself within.
Almost everything I say is tinged with irony !
