Help me, Please! I'm going out of my mind!

Hi arborlad,
Thanks for your question. Yes, it does feel quite gritty.

I did the experiment. The finer particles floated on the surface and the rest sunk to the bottom.

Do you have any ideas? Thanks again.

Are you close to the coast? I'd say wind-blown sand deposited with rain droplets.

Hi Clifford Pope,
Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately we're not near the coast. We're in the suburbs of a town.

I cleared the cushions and the car roof of the deposits late this afternoon and, thus far, there's no sign of fresh soil yet. It's probably going to be interesting to see if there is anything there again in the morning.

Thanks again.

Floating particles indicate the presence of some sort of organic material/plant life.

The photo on the bonnet shows they have arrived 'wet', and then dried out - you can see the residue left behind.

Much would depend on it happening again, keeping a sample might help to identify what it is.

Your trowel handle badly needs some linseed oil.

:D You're definitely right, arborlad.

I see what you're saying about the residue.

There are fresh piles of particles this morning on the cushions and car, but fewer. I find this odd because it's windier today, so if they're blowing in I would have expected the opposite. Perhaps they've just blown further.
Curiouser and cuiouser...

It doesn't seem I'm going to come to any conclusion, but many thanks for your help and guidance.

Hi,

Leave a sheet of white paper, better still, white card out ... see if any debris falls on it, when, and over what period. Does it stick to the paper/card? Can you invert and scan? At least you will have something to take to Environmental Health at your LA.

Are there any explosive excavations taking place within fall-out distance of your house?

OT ... the residents of Baglan Bay in South Wales complained that the oil refinery was polluting their house roofs. The refinery replied that it was algea ... which only grew in clean air. ???

You have messy builders

In all probability that's nest building mud dropped by Swallows or similar
