Chickens

Post by COGGY »

Hi
Is it considered cruel to have chickens running round in a fairly small area, 15 feet square, with no vegetation growing? Should they have access to vegetation? They are not my chickens.

Hello COGGY,

It depends on how many chickens are in the run. General rule of thumb is 4 square foot per bird.
Proper job my bewties................................................. Cheers 'n' gone!

What about caged chickens?
Whilst it might be considered 'cruel' don't confuse this with being able to enforce anything other than the Law relating to this matter.

As far as I know - having kept chickens in the garden for years - there are no laws apart from basic ones about animal cruelty.

The only thing I can suggest is to have a word with the RSPCA.

Coggy,
I am sure that vegetation would be benificial to the chickens, are they on soil or concrete or something else?
I would have thought that 2 chickens in a 15' square area if they can scratch the soil for bugs and the like is not considered too cruel, but I'm sure it would be be nicer for them if they can be moved to fresh grass on a regular basis.

They are on part soil and part concrete. The area is not clean by any standards. I would like to put the owners of the chickens to live there for a day.

So if there are less than 56 birds in this run it is fine.

I don't know how you calculated that as the OP says the run is 15 foot square.

Hi,

15ft square is 15ft x 15ft = 225sq.ft. Not the same thing as 15sq.ft

I think the happiest chickes get to scratch around on top of a dung heap .... which may not make the neighbours happy.

2 birds in a 15 foot square is a relative paradise, you should see the conditions the majority of "barn" eggs come from.
