They were quite bent so it is hard to tell which way they should run. They looked more horizontal but this could have been the remains of a vertical concrete post which was broken and pushed over at some point in the past. There is nothing else they would need to hold up as they just run under a patio on the neighbours side now, and are not connected to the sewer or anything else on our side. Maybe they were just historic buried rubble across the boundary - there is a lot of concrete all around the area which goes a long way down and seems to be intertwined, hence we couldn't determine what could be dug out and what is part of the sewer drain entrance and system.
