Meaning of 'root of hedge'

I (and my two neighbours) have at the end of our gardens a 'hedge' consisting of 30 to 35 ft high yew trees set about 5 feet apart. In each case our Land Registry plans indicate that this boundary is the 'root of hedge'. Has anyone come across this term? Can't find any reference on the net....
