Stop the spammers!

Post by Mattylad » Sat Sep 25, 2010 3:48 pm

Can the site admin please be a bit more proactive to stop the spammers that are joining and posting on the site on a daily basis.

Things like improving the registration, preventing links in signature lines, not allowing links until the 10th post etc can all be done.

If you do not have time then how about asking for more assistance and making a few regular posters moderators with the specific duty of helping keep the spammers at bay. Abuse of the position can easily be dealt with - although the most likely result would be a reduction in spam.

phpBB forums can have lots of mods done to them to aid you with this.
see here

And another thing - why not change the phpbb logo in the top left corner for a Gardenlaw one?

I agree - please delegate limited admin/moderator powers to 3 or 4 trusted regulars.

Spam like this:

or:

or:
http://www.gardenlaw.co.uk/phpBB2/viewt ... 270#120270
or:

or:
http://www.gardenlaw.co.uk/phpBB2/viewt ... 124#120124
or:
http://www.gardenlaw.co.uk/phpBB2/viewt ... 536#120536
or:

are just a few examples.

If it continues it will seriously damage the reputation of the forum and the good work that it does in helping others with GL related problems.

Please look into the modifications on the site I have suggested - if you are unsure how to install these then pm me - I have experience of running phpbb forums and adding modifications to them.

Was it also 2005 when the last anti spam measures were undertaken? :D

Limited powers were delegated quite some time ago.

Under General Topics I can only edit and delete post content if appropriate.

Then those limited powers were too limited or given to the wrong person.

There are technical things that can be done to stop a lot of these.
They cost nothing and would take little time to setup.

I fear that ignoring this issue will be the demise of this excellent site.

I see that some of the above spammer posts are still there.

Is pointing them out not enough?

Have you emailed site admin with your suggestions, rather than posting here? I agree with your sentiments though.

I have tried contacting admin too.

It seems that they do not want to respond on either.

OK Mattylad, I do not have the time to go into a blow by blow account by providing a definition of forum spam.

However, your witch hunt of anyone leaving a link in their signature could ostensibly be classed as spamming this forum too!

As for admin fiddling with the forum setup!

Get a grip, its a minor niggle and as proved many times over will not affect the quality or quantity of people using this forum.

At this time there is nothing to suggest any criminal activity has taken place and therefore no explanation is necessary.

With the exception of a major hiatus (forum crash) in 2005, the Garden Law forum has functioned and proved itself fit for purpose since 2003.

What you continually highlight as spam is nothing more than someone leaving a tidy advertising link in their signature, which as forum members they/we are allowed to do.

Of course, if we apply a reasonable man test, and the text and link both contain details of what we could visibly see as links to salacious activity, then appropriate action will be taken.

I will now lock this thread, as it only serves to attract more spam comments.
