Is living in a caravan on my own land possible ?

Post by billy the kid » Mon Jan 05, 2015 9:18 pm

My friend has a lovely bungalow by a nature reserve and next door to him travelers have bought a plot of land and live in their caravans- 2 caravans , 1 pre-fab bungalow thingy-ma-jig.
Now to be honest he likes the travelers as they look after him and his property but how do you get away with buying a plot of land and sighting a caravan on it and living there for all to see ? I would love to do it ! :D

Looking forward to the replies - "Thank You"

Billy

I believe that the trick is to keep your caravan mobile, tyres pumped up, and every so often drive it off and then back on.

It will need an MOT test from 2018 :(

Hi Billy,

how do you get away with buying a plot of land and sighting a caravan on it and living there for all to see ?

surely the best people to ask are the travellers...

Kind regards, Mac

Hi

Why not get your friend to ask them. They like him so will probably tell him the truth.

No, they'll probably lie, just for the craic and on general principles. We've got our own in house half-brick traveller on this forum, ask him. Cobdale's a generally good sort, I'd believe him before a whole lot of his relatives.

I agree this is good advice. Why did I not think of it?

Kind regards

Hi Billy,

the law has it that a landowner/occupier is allowed to do quite a lot on his land.

however, if the landowner/occupier wishes to develop some of his land - erect/build up/demolish structures or change what use the land is put to - he must first obtain planning title (ie "planning permission").

you've not mentioned whether the occupiers of the caravans have obtained planning permission.

the authorities might be interested, but tipping them off might cause you/your friend a headache.

Kind regards, Mac

Hi Mac/ all,
They are decent folk but to ask a traveller this question might arise suspicion so i wont ask.
They do have refuse bins though ?
Anyway the traveller friends are not the question - the question is "Is living in a caravan on my own land possible" please.

regards.

Hi billy,

of course it's possible - you've witnessed someone doing it.

is it illegal/unlawful? depends on the specific circumstances (which you've not mentioned).

Kind regards, Mac
